CBM Review - The Crossing

 Author - Serita Ann Jakes
 A Reconciliation Novel

 Excerpt:

"His kind of love gave me flowers, stolen moments secrets. But never kindness, mercy, gentleness, a sense of safety. Without those things that make a woman
feel safe, a man's promise of love is nothing but pomp and circumstance."

Lately I've been looking to expose the sin in my life. The good Christian syndrome has a way of lulling me to sleep and I can't take the chance of being found without oil in my lamp.  This book challenged me to examine myself.  It was akin to standing before the mirror naked.  Instinctively I try to cover up so even I can't see.

Unfortunately I identified some with each character.  Ideally I would like to able to say I am at a higher level in my walk with the LORD but when I was forced to really contend with an impending appointment with death things took on a more sobering reality.

The Crossing, deliberately, tackled fear of death. Miss Remington's character especially spoke to my heart. Her voice brought home the main point and clanged the alarm of reconciliation to Father, God through his Son Christ Jesus. Now!  I don't want God to bring judgement on me, I'd rather honor Him and quickly remove any sin in my house.

There were many many absolutely beautiful lines in the story.  Mrs. Jakes really captured some of the thoughts that have never made it beyond my lips but I've spoken them inwardly or experienced them at some point or other.

For example, when BJ proclaimed..."This earth Almighty God has created is beautiful, and I can almost hear the trees clapping their hands in praise.  Oh mama, daddy, darling Claudia. Stop. Incline your ears. Hear the sounds of heaven."

There was so much to take away from this story.  For one thing a new found appreciation for the great grace I've been given. Somehow the moments seem like blessings being poured over me and I am overtaken.  How could I forsake so great a salvation.

The sins that doth so easily beset me don't seem that formidable after reading this novel.  They were kind of put into their proper place.  After reading this novel I have  a sense of urgency to obey God, submit, and not resist Him.

I recommend this book to anyone who can admit they have become somewhat of a Christian slacker. This one will challenge you to get in the mirror and not soon forget what you look like once you walk away.

Line that stood out:

Expressed by Mrs. Remington (BJ's mom) "True repentance isn't just saying 'I'm sorry.' It's saying 'I'm sorry, I'll never, ever do that again because my relationship with you means more to me than anything.'"

Take away scripture:    (Deuteronomy 30:19-20)

19I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live:
20That thou mayest love the LORD thy God, and that thou mayest obey his voice, and that thou mayest cleave unto him: for he is thy life, and the length of thy days: that thou mayest dwell in the land which the LORD sware unto thy fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give them.

Unusual influences in my spiritual walk- Part I

There have been far more unintentional influences in my spiritual walk than intentional. For example, my mother influenced me spiritually the day she came home and told her live in boyfriend that she had accepted Christ as her personal savior and he would have to leave.

Andre(left) - sister Juwanna Marine(right) -

 Juwanna and Monica

The boyfriend had been molesting me since around the age of 8. So when the LORD saved her he was really saving me. (Matthew 18:6)

A few years later I spent a glorious summer learning proper female etiquette with my absolute favorite aunt Phyllis. And after she had me iron just about all her sheets and pillow cases (a gratuitous task in my opinion) I got a chance to learn how much we had in common.

My auntie shared with me one of the best books I have ever read in my life outside of the Bible. Hinds Feet on High Places was the story that rang a warning trumpet to the fear in me. Like the book's main character I was Much-Afraid. There began my cognizant journey with the LORD. (Psalm 18:33)

How about when I was pregnant with my son the doctors told me - because I had been diagnosed with cancer a year prior, and was still taking Chemo - there was a huge chance he wouldn't make it here safely. That little inspiration is now in college @ Robert Morris University on a partial academic scholarship.

Monica and son - Andre
I have to tell you when my son first left it was bitter sweet. We were going to get him checked in on the flight and then grab a quick bite. So when the airport security informed me that I couldn't go any further with him because of the new check points at the terminal I just helplessly watched him from the other side of the barrier, a young man,  as he put his things into the baskets to be run through the detector and my tears flooded to the surface.

We hadn't had lunch like we planned...and I didn't even get my hug and a sugar for my cheek.   I walked away from him at Reagan National Airport. I heard him in the background trying to console me. "Don't cry mom; It's okay; I'll call you on your cell."

(Top) Monica- (Bottom) Great Grandma nannie

Despite the crying I made it to my car.  The uncontrollable tears did eventually stop a few weeks later. But from this experience I learned to appreciate the moments you have with folks. We can't take people for granted. Somehow I learn to cling to God more through all my relationships good or bad.

There is more to this story. Check out Part 2 of this article in the next CBM post.

Day 8 E100 Strange But True

Does God test us? Some say He does not and others say the opposite.  But the Word of God shows that God did test Abram when he told him to put his only son on the altar.

So much can be gleaned from what happened to Abram. First it reminds us of Father, God's sacrifice of His son on our behalf.  As a parent I know it took more than a lot to put the child that you love on the altar to die but my children are not my own, I'm not my own. We were all bought with a price.

There  had to be a tumult going on inside of father Abraham.  But this reminds me that God sent his son knowing he would be sacrificed and that His Son obeyed Him and prepared Himself to be the sacrifice.  Wow!  God's only son... no way for us to say that God doesn't know what we go through today because He definitely does.

Day 8 covers Abraham trusts God no matter what.

Day 7 E100 He Feels Your Pain

Submit, submit, submit to the only wise, faithful God!  Day 7 was filled with reasons why we need not look at our problem or fear but to keep our eyes on God.  Is it going to appear impossible at times? Absolutely!

Will I want to quit and find my own way? Yup.  But if we just hold on to God and remember his benefits the time will come for our breakthrough. If we just trust him and lean not to our own understanding we can experience miracles even today.

Reading about Abrams life at this point in his story lets me know that this man of God wasn't perfect. He was fallible and trusting in God worked for him. It can certainly work for us. If only we would surrender wholeheartedly we would see like Abram did that God is not able to lie.

Day 7 covers Genesis 15 Abram and the
impossible promise God made to him.

CBM Review - Raised Right

Author - Alisa Harris
 A personal account

Excerpt: "Working to correct  those first bad drafts has made me strive for more charity in my everday life. It has shown me that I don't always  live out the things I know to be true because complaining about falsehood is so much more convenient  than living out a radical alternative."

Alisa Harris sets it off in this book.  A young woman full of Christian principles and political ideals allows the reader to walk with her as she puts these two powerful forces in perspective for her life.

I think the main point of the writing is to share, awaken and educate us to unspoken things on our own journey.  Sometimes we don’t know what we believe till we experience a shaking in our lives.

One of my favorite scenes is a good example of this; it happened at a quiet Brooklyn coffee shop. Our heroine experienced an unusual but monumental meltdown complete with tears, shouting and name calling while defending a young downtrodden woman.

At this point in her untangling Ms. Harris was on the verge of finding her own voice as a child of God that happens to be a responsible citizen in the world. While she is developing her own reasons for believing or fighting for what's right her parents would say she was raised this way.

The story speaks to the readers where ever they may be - socially, spiritually and politically. Either you’ve encountered someone like Alisa with her Christian passion and well versed political convictions or maybe this describes you. Nevertheless there is something necessary for us all to understand.

According to the author there are many intentional and unintentional influences in life but God is the only wise one. He has a plan for the faceless person in your peripheral on the street, the purposeful parents, the impressionable and the government official wearing a $300 suit. We can’t be afraid to live out our convictions in love.

I also gained a better understanding of the political Christian perspective. Maybe answered some of my unasked questions about my role as a Christian and participant in the political process.  The author definitely kept it real, at times admonishing us by her experiences or enlightening us through her observations.  This is a resounding testimony of how God can shape us into vessels for his purpose!

Lines that stood out:

Expressed by Alisa Harris - (page7-8)
"Working to correct those first bad drafts has made me strive for more charity in my everyday life."

Take away scripture: (Jeremiah 29:11)

For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the LORD, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope."

Day 6 E100 Why Me!

This day's reading proved to be a challenge for the Bible Reader. She ended by sharing her very personal testimony.  Do you have a testimony? The character Abram in today's reading showed us how to remain in God.

For if we remain in constant contact with the Lord - when we make bad decisions - God is prepared to provide as long as we are abiding in Him and don't hide.  Please let us know where God has brought you from and how you have remained in Him.

Day 5 E100 Can We Talk?

No one knows us better that our God.  He walks among us to see how we are doing,  just like a parent checks in on their children to see if they are playing nicely.  We are more like our God than we think.

But don't be surprised if you are stopped or hindered from doing something you thought was a good idea.  Because pride may not be far off. And it may not always be the enemy but the Lord that is confounding your language. Check yourself.

CBM - Abraham's Well Final Discussion

Author: Sharon Ewell Foster
Final Discussion: chapters 42-62
Abraham's Well - CBM calls this 'Inspirational Fiction'

Excerpt: Abraham Proof
He had kissed his wife and their two children goodbye.  "Who are you?" He asked them as he mounted his horse.  "we are the grand children of Armentia. Armentia who has a star. We are black and we are Cherokee...They were so young but he knew they would remember. (page 268)

Q. Did the book end the way you expected?
A. The story didn't end the way I expected but it was believable.  I was especially touched by two
scenes. One was the moments Armentia's lost son spent with his children before going off to war.
The other was when Armentia's grandsons carried her.

Q. Would you recommend this book to other readers?
A. Yes! This book was published back in 2006 but the story's theme is filled with heritage.
The author's background influenced her writing so that authenticity and her unique perspective
were apparent throughout. Enjoyed the way she entertwined the spiritual perspective. It was
real. and not overt. This was a story of hope, faith and trust in God till the end.

Lines that stood out:
Page 306  (Told by Armentia)

"It was like I rested my head on the Breath Giver's shoulder, like He held me on his lap."

Take Away Scripture  Deuteronomy 6:4-11

4Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD:
5And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.
6And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart:
7And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.
8And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes.
9And thou shalt write them upon the posts of thy house, and on thy gates.
10And it shall be, when the LORD thy God shall have brought thee into the land which he sware unto thy fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give thee great and goodly cities, which thou buildedst not,
11And houses full of all good things, which thou filledst not, and wells digged, which thou diggedst not, vineyards and olive trees, which thou plantedst not; when thou shalt have eaten and be full; (Retrieved from BibleGateway.com)

Day 4 E-100 Never Again

God said He would never cause a flood of that magnitude again thanks to Noah. Apparently Noah had something that most of us want or need.  And that's patience! Let's see...he was ridiculed by his neighbors,  he moved from the place he had built to a boat filled with animals.

For many days it did nothing but rain. He couldn't sleep in his norml bed and would never see his home again. Everyone he knew was gone except for his family.

Day 4 Reading includes Genesis 8:1-9:17

What's Your Favorite Book of the Bible?

Pic c/o Fotosearch
To stop a small quip war that was slowly brewing between my two daughters, from escalating into a serious headache for me, I asked them to help with this blog post. "What's your favorite book of the Bible ladies?" The clamorous two quieted as they turned and looked at me.
I had them right where I wanted them and almost instantly they forgot about taunting one another and yelled out their answers. "The old testament!" said my oldest daughter and less than a split second later my younger daughter raised her hand but didn't hold back "the new testament!"
Their answers were great and like them I'd forgotten my original plan which was to quiet them down. Before we knew it quoting Bible facts became the focus. We were all laughing, enjoying one another and God.  It was great!
There is an old English Proverb that says "the soul is healed by being with children." And in my humble opinion whoever said that didn't have teenagers. But I know God knows how to speak to the heart of men my daughters (generation x) and me included.
Nevertheless, I did want to share that Proverbs was my favorite book of the Bible because it's about lessons learned and the wisdom gained from applying them to your life.  God is good!

Day 3 of E-100 And Almost Wiped Out

Bible Reader Monica Jackson James was hindered but not stopped from making her Day 3 video journal. "I am beginning to find that I have so many things that need my attention more than ever before. If it's not my body telling me I need sleep it's my children and family screaming for my time. However, to God be the glory; I will be committed to this project."

Monica's situation is nothing unusual.  Once you make a committment like this there are going to be scenarios that come against the effort. And let me say...your family is just doing what they always do and of course you need some sleep in order to be able to function.

The real culprit is the enemy of our soul. We have to be encouraged to stay on course. Our Bible tells us (Matthew 25:13) to Watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of man cometh.  Be encouraged to stay committed to the thing/s God is telling you to do.

Day 3 readings include Genesis 6:5-7:24

CBM's Discussion - Abraham's Well Chapters 21-41

Title  - Abraham's Well
Author - Sharon Ewell Foster
Total Chapters - 62
This  Review covers chapters 21-41

Excerpt: Our friendship walked out the door that day with the words she said and when she carried what was mine out the door in her arms. Miss Lillian traded love for a blanket. But she ain't much different; people do it all the time. (p. 148)

  • Q - How do the characters change or evolve throughout the chapters covered in this review? What events trigger such changes?

  • A - A metamorphasis has taken place in the review chapters. After finally settling down from the extraordinarily long walk on the Trail of Tears there is nothing and no-one left the same. Sin has weaseled it's way into the fold. I would compare the beginning of the story to the Garden of Eden and this section of the story to Life after the Garden.

Our main character Armentia a Black Cherokee is slowly adjusting to the fact that she is actually a slave. The funny thing is she was born a slave. This realization left her vulnerable to love and loss. Not only that but she is a teenager growing into a woman and her family fears she will be sold away.  With a new sky above their heads and different texture of ground under their feet the only hope is to interpret God's mercy in the middle of the storm.

  • Q - Did certain parts of the reading make you uncomfortable? If so, why did you feel that way? Did this lead to a new understanding or awareness of some aspect of your life you might not have thought about before?

  • A - There were some scenes that made me squirm a little. The talk of flagrant beatings and shootings happening to anyone undeservedly is hard to accept. But these same things happen now and make me squirm today. The story of the Holocaust or the African slave trade are all very hurtful stories. But what makes me able to get beyond the hurt is the fact that Jesus - the Prince of Peace was persecuted, wounded and beaten by men.  After receiving that in my spirit there is very little that can't be forgiven.

  • Q - Christian books should point to Christ. Was there a moment, in this reading, when you felt that prodding?

  • A - I felt this prodding toward Christ especially when grappling with the process that the characters could not avoid going through.  Sometimes it has to be this way for us in order that the grace and plan of God can shine forth.

    Lines that stood out:
    Page 201

"Oh my brothers and sisters! I wish that all of you could read. I wish that you could read this book for yourself! Then you would know that this book, this letter of love, was written for you!"

    Take away scripture:

Isaiah 53:5 New KJV tells us -
But He was wounded for our transgressions,
    He was bruised for our iniquities;
The chastisement for our peace was upon Him,
And by His stripes we are healed.
    Summary:
As chapter 20 closes Armentia is moving on to the next stage in her young life. She's been introduced to the Bible and heard of a place where slavery never happened. With a bat of the eye her world is turned upside down again by the transformed Mama Emma.  Will she see her beloved Mother again? Where will her own trail of tears lead?  Read remaining chapters 42-62 to find out.

Day 2 of E-100 Knowledge of Good and Evil

Day 2 of the Essential 100 Challenge was filled with symbolism, drama, lies and deceit all the juicy scandal found in a soap opera.  And we're only in Genesis chapter 3. Still the same results though - a whirlwind of sin to pass to the next generation.  Monica was careful to jot down exactly where she experienced this the most.  So check her out.

"What happend was the reading of all these other books left me empty.  In response to my emptiness Holy Spirit said; For now put down all the other books and focus on reading God's Word. And here I am. It's going to be great! I know this is my time to draw nigh to God and like his Word says He will draw nigh to me.  I am very excited at what accomplishing this effort will bring."

Monica is prayerful that this will inspire others to take up the mantra and read their Word in its entirety as well.

A Journey Worth the Bible Challenge

Bible in 90 days  &  Essential 100 Challenge

I never realized what I was forsaking by not reading the scripture in its entirety and on a regular basis. Here is what I found. The Bible in 90 days is a great Bible reading curriculum that I ran across online while looking for fun ways to read the Bible. I actually came across two - the Essential 100 and the Bible in 90 days challenge. Both these programs from the start motivated me and awakened something that was dormant deep down inside of me.

When a thing is right... I usually get that certain feeling inside. I want to call that feeling confirmation or peace. But no matter what, that's when I knew that this was definitely something Father, God wanted me to do. I can't say how surprised I was to find that I wasn't the only professing Christian that hadn't read their entire Bible. In fact recent Gallup polls show that Less than 20% of professing Christians have read the entire Bible, that more atheists have read the Bible than so-called believers. What???

This fact helped me to understand that I was in a curious situation. How could I say I follow Christ if I had never taken the time to hear all that He has to say in his Word? Or be changed by His Word. I've read so many other books to fruition. This also answered some other questions like, why wasn't I experiencing breakthrough in some tough areas or why wasn't the Lord talking to me? I really wasn't hearing God's voice. I mean I prayed and talked to Him but somewhere I knew I wasn't on a narrow enough path to hear Him speaking to me.

I don't know how the benefits (hearing God's voice, getting the whole story, experiencing God's power for everyday use and peace...etc.) of reading God's entire Word on a regular basis escaped me prior to this revelation but this has motivated me to read it and all of it and help others to do so as well. What about you?

    Not Your Ordinary Book Club

Do you realize that less than 20% of professing Christians have read their Bible in its entirety? Well it's true. In light of this disappointing news Bible Readers Club has done some research online looking for good Bible reading programs that work great to aid individuals, small groups and churches in reading the whole Bible and/or developing daily Bible reading habits.

The Bible Readers Association has been created on Meetup.com to encourage people to read the complete Bible book. So don't miss out on this Great! opportunity to change your "Word" reading habits for the better.

    WHAT IS THIS MEETUP'S PURPOSE?

The Bible Readers Club was created to host the different programs out there like the Essential 100 (e100) Challenge or The Bible in 90 Days program. Our goal is to facilitate more Bible reading among professing Christians. Participants can expect to develop what we call a "Holy habit" of daily Bible reading. We want to create an encouraging environment where each member will stay motivated to read.  Helping one another is a big part of the process. Review - A Living Sacrifice

Author Watchman Nee goes from baptism to consecration in 4 easy to comprehend chapters.  And all this according to a barrage of scripture that you probably have read but never quite looked at with as much detail before now.

Nee also teaches about how to deal with "the things one did before trusting in the Lord."  This lesson alone was worth reading the book.  There aren't too many books out there that talk about what to do regarding the things you did in the past and how to conclude them. Good stuff!

The entire time I read the book I felt the overwhelming sense that the answer or the power lies in obedience to God's Word. It's as simple as that.  From lesson to lesson my mind flashed to scenarios that I realized my subconscious resistance to God's Word had caused.   The realization of my true state, in that I am not always the "victim" my heart wants me to be, became apparently clear and the enemy's antics at work in me were exposed.

And like the rich young ruler had to find out..(Luke 18:18-30). God wants all or nothing.  I know that's hard for the heart to accept because we want only to see the gentle, understanding side of our God. Heavenly Father sacrificed His all....the least I can do is sacrifice anything I can't take with me.
In short,  "A Living Sacrifice" is not so much about what I'm giving up but the relationship I gain with Father, God because of my obedience.

CBM has read "A Living Sacrifice" by teacher Watchman Nee and it was a spiritual eye opening experience.

    STAY FOCUSED

So much is happening in the world. If we don't stay focused as followers of Christ then we take a chance of forfeiting such a great salvation.

    Watch therefore!

    Keep your lamp with oil...

so you'll be ready to meet ME.

    says the Lord.
